Friday Five, or The Strange Ways My Brain Proves to be a Sponge

I often marvel at the incredible network of witty and clever and helpful people I've found through the wonder that is the blog neighborhood. Although I don't know most of you in what we call "real life," it's funny the ways you creep into my daily consciousness nonetheless. Case(s) in point?

Five things I would never think or do, if not for the Internets

  1. It would never occur to me to wonder, when opening the oven door, if the rush of heat blasting at me could actually melt my glasses.

  2. I would never see a cryptic personalized license plate and think, "BYMKRS? What the hell does that mean? I wonder if Malia would know." (In case you're curious, she didn't.)

  3. I would never even consider spending $10 on a single tube of deodorant.* (Tube? I would not even use the word "tube" alongside "deodorant"!) Instead, I am not only considering it, but am annoyed that I was at one of the only three stores in the Twin Cities that carries it and I forgot to pick some up.

  4. I would never search four different grocery stores for a raved-about Lean Cuisine I'd not yet tried.**

  5. I would not, when trying to resist the urge to snack, touch my hand to my flabby midsection and chant, "Nothing ever tastes as good as being skinny feels."***

So what about the rest of you? Surely I'm not alone with things like this. Tell me, what has a blog made you do?

* Gah! Temporarily unavailable? Guinness Girl and Maliavale, you must be spreading the word like mad!

** I finally found that damn panini, and GG's right: it is tasty. Mainly what amused me, though, were the unusually complicated (for a frozen meal) cooking instructions, and the enthusiastic use within those instructions of the all-capitalized term "REVOLUTIONARY GRILLING TRAY!" (to describe a silver-lined circular piece of cardboard... revolutionary indeed).

*** Nabbs, I'm sure this was you, but I can't find the post in your archives. You had no idea you'd given me a personal mantra, did you?

Midwestgrrl's blog encouraged me to try new face wash from Neutrogena, your blog has been making me try to figure out how to add those cool things like lists etc to the side of my blog...Also MANY blogs I have been reading lately have links to amazing photos on flickr so now I have actually been debating spending $1000 on a digital SLR. Something I would have NEVER even thought about until recently!

I learned NOT to waste money on Sudacare Soothers, courtesy of Guinness Girl. And that if they ever build a Chipotle here, I must be first in line. I learned that from...well, damn near the entire blogosphere, it seems! Hee.

OMG. I LOVE #5. I'm totally going to adopt that mantra. We will be this weird club of sorts, The Those Girls Who Grab Their Bellies And Chant Club!

I have met three bloggers in person, which is something I never thought I would do. (All meetings turned out well, by the way.)

I am also going to try some new DVDs, based on blogger recommendations.

Oh, and I got the Mineral foundation stuff based on recommendations from Cupcake Tent, Grumpy Frump, and Sundry Buzz.

This is like an advertising survey!

Stargazer--I have been similarly inspired by all the great photographers out there, but it's still more in an admiration phase than a "I'm taking pictures all the time myself now" phase. I think I just don't know how to take arty and cool pictures with my little point-and-shoot.

As for the lists, I can try to help you with that if you'd like. (I'm no expert myself, but it should be pretty straightforward since you're using a Blogger template.) I'll try to remember to look at your source code later and see if I can send you something that you could easily plug in.

Liz--That's funny; I was just thinking about those soothers when I saw a commercial for them last night. I thought, "Those seem like kind of a cool idea," and then I remembered, "Wait. Wasn't someone on the Internet (probably GG) badmouthing them recently?"

I haven't been to Chipotle in weeks, but now that I read about Nabbalicious's new photo project today and you mentioned it here, I am totally going to have to go there for lunch. Mmmm... Chipotle.

GG--Ha. I'm not entirely sure I want to be a member of that club, but since I brought it up, after all, I guess it's fitting. Also, I have gone back and added linkage where linkage is due. My apologies for being blind to your little search box. I am so ashamed.

R--I didn't mean to skip you there just because you said you weren't going to reply to my comments anymore. ;-) Yours just came in while I was typing that last one.

I'm glad you didn't say "Only two of the blogger meetings went well," because then I would have to wonder if I was the disastrous third one!

I wish I could take credit for that, but it wasn't me! Maybe you're getting it mixed up with the time that Darren and I pigged out and then compared protruding bellies? Heh, heh.

Really? Oh, I could have sworn it was you. Whoops. I very much apologize to whomever wrote that and didn't get credit. (If he/she wanted credit, that is. Maybe making me chant about wanting to be skinny is not something anyone wants to own up to after all...)

Well Stefanie, since you are helping people today, how do I find search engine hits? I use blogger too!

Something I would never think to do w/ out the Internets would have to simply be writing a blog!!!

Okay, I would write a proper comment, but I'm ***still*** laughing about the "Nothing ever tastes as good as being skinny feels." I'm soooo gonna use that the next time I have a craving for fatty food. :)

Jen(s)--You need to add a stat counter to your blog template to see your search engine hits (and other info). There are lots of them out there, but I use Sitemeter. A basic account is free, and they provide pretty decent info on their web site as far as how to get the counter on your blog, etc. I haven't used any other counters, but if you type something like "blog stat counters" in a search engine, I'm sure you'll find plenty of them.

FunkyB--I know. Surprisingly, it's actually a bit helpful! I did a Google search to try to find any blog I read that mentioned that phrase sometime, and I couldn't find it, so I have no idea who told me about it, but it turns out it's a slogan Weight Watchers has been using for a long time. I like the idea that Nabbalicious or some other blog friend made it up better. :-)

A) Read lots of new books that people rave about;

B) Try lots of new recipes/random products/makeup stuff that people rave about; and

C) I second married jen/single jen. :)

I was hoping a commenter had figured out that license plate by now, but no such luck. I'm obsessed, I know. If you see them again, can you politely tail them around town, then tap on their car window when they flip you off and ask them what it means? Thanks. That'd be great.

A blog made me go on a diet.

Sigh...so hungry.

Metalia--I second all of those. :-)

Malia--Um, sure. No problem. I'm on it.

Jenny--Gasp; maybe that is not a blog you should be reading? Just kidding. Good luck with that. Stay strong. :-)
