Not that I'm getting ahead of myself or anything (Lord no; have you ever heard me exhibit any sort of lofty optimism before a date??), but it just occurred to me that if by chance the guy I'm meeting tonight actually turns out to be perfect for me... and somewhere at a reasonable point in time down the road we should get married... and I should be a traditional sort of girl and change my last name... my name would be Stefanie Tanner.
No. Just... no. That cannot happen.
Such a shame, really. Via e-mail he seemed like he might actually maybe be a nice guy...

Your a modern woman - keep your own name!
AHHH! HAHAHAHAHA. Oh, please, yes!
Is his name Danny???
That would be SO awesome. Ha!
Ooh, ooh, ooh ... DETAILS!!! I haven't been on a date in over a month. It's been so long that I've just decided to live vicariously through various blogger's dating lives.
That would be great. We work with a company with a "Michael Bolton" (a la Office Space). He doesn't go by Mike, either. Just Michael.
Don't hyphenate. At least don't hyphenate your KIDS' names. There's a boy in my son's room at daycare with the same first name as another boy, so they use last initials. For that boy, they use BOTH initials, so you hear them calling something to the effect of: "Bobby L-G, come here, please!"
That's it! You've found the one!
Oh yeah, he's gonna be the one. And then you'll be forced to take the stance that you don't believe in changing your last name, whether you do or not, 'cause you could NEVER live with being Stefanie Tanner. Or you could change your first name instead, I suppose...how do you feel about Michelle? ;)
Please, please become Stefanie Tanner??
You could rename your blog "How Rude!"
HA!! Oh, yes. You HAVE to marry him now. You cannot let a great name like that get away.
Also, you should name your boys Joey, Jessie and Danny.
At least his last name isn't Moose. One of my good friends from back home married a guy who's last name is seriously MOOSE.
R--No. No, it is not. I think if it were, I'd have noticed the connection much earlier, though.
FunkyB--Sorry; I've got no entertaining details, really. It was an OK date... nothing freakish or amusing to relay, nothing magical enough to get excited about right away... we shall see, I suppose.
3Cs--My last name is short enough that I think I could hyphenate a kid's name without causing too much trauma, but I will worry about that when the time comes. My inclination would be not to hyphenate a kid unless my would-be husband hyphenates as well, and there aren't all that many men out there willing to do that. (Really this is not something I will need to consider for a long, long time--if ever--so I don't actually need to debate it right now.)
Single Jen--Moose? MOOSE?? Yeah, that's bad.
The rest of you--Glad I could amuse. :-) And in case you're curious, I did resist the urge to share this name-change thought with the guy last night. Even if I was kidding, somehow I still think most guys don't want you mentioning marriage on a first date. ;-)
What Mal said!!!! Besides, you're SteF, not StePH. :P
Heh!
This reminded me of an assistant my uncle used to have whose name was Dolores and she was seeing a guy whose last name was Barriga (Dolores in spanish is Pain, and Barriga is Tummy).
They used to tease her so much about what her name would be (In Mexico is customary to take the husband's last name using a possessive noun as a link -de [of]) Dolores De Barriga -Tummy Aches-, that she broke up with him.
A friend of a friend got married a few years back - her hyphenated name would have been Bass-Fish.
She kept Bass.
But we still had a pile of lame jokes to make at the wedding, so it wasn't a total comedic loss.
That rocks!!!
My husband's cousin married a girl whose first name is half of our last name.
for example (not really our name)her name is Del Delson. hee hee.
You need to wait for a guy who has the last name Powers.
And my verification word is fartmint
Poppy--Good point. But it would still sound just as silly out loud.
LC and Steve--Oh my. Those are both way worse than being Stefanie Tanner.
Paisley--I can't date a guy with the last name "Steffen" for the same reason.
BK--You're right... Stefanie Powers even spells her first name the same way. And that word verification made me laugh out loud. Because apparently I am a 12-year-old boy (and you are, too). :-)
Are you kidding me? But you MUST! I mean, if for no other reason than the fact that every time you messed something up, a Casio would magically play, and the situation would resolve itself within a half hour. Did you stop and think of THAT?!
We are going to a wedding this summer for some of hubs old college friends...His last name is the same as her first. Odd. We are also invited to a wedding that has no alcohol at the reception...is it wrong that I find that more odd? :)
Hmmm... thinking what your simple last name-hyphenated-combo might be:
Stefanie Sun-Tanner
Stefanie Moore-Tanner
Am I close?
It could be worse. Your first name could be Donna Jo, and then you'd have to be DJ Tanner. A "How Rude!" blog is much better than a whiny blog.
Personally, I want to be Kimmy Gibbler.
Ha! Excellent point. Am also laughing at DCMM's comment above. A "How Rude!" blog is MUCH better than a whiney Deej blog.
Metalia--Well, sure, if a name change came with an added bonus like that, it might be worth all the teasing and mocking. Somehow I don't think that's how it works, unfortunately.
BMC--Is that woman going to change her last name? Man, that would be confusing. And I am with you: no alcohol at a reception is just plain wrong and unnatural.
DCMM--Ha! No, but "Sun-Tanner" would definitely be a ridiculous hyphenated combo! Incidentally, there is a pop singer from Singapore (I think) who's named Stefanie Sun. I get search engine hits for her all the time.
GG--Rest assured, I have no plans for either of those options. ;-)
But at least Single Jen and I's friend Moose, embraces it by sending out Christmas cards that say Merry Christmoose! Also? Her maiden name wasn't much better. I, on the other hand, upgraded my last name. I had a weird one and went to a normal, All American one :)
I don't see how she could, can you imagine, "Hi, My name is Andrea Andrea"?
MJ--I really think the name I'm being asked to take will strongly affect whether I change my name (if I ever get married, that is). I actually think the new tradition should be that both the man and the woman take whichever name they agree is better. Wouldn't that be a fair plan?
BMC--Well, I used to babysit for a guy named Michael Michaels, so stranger things have happened!
